Demands on students are increasing as never before. Education is changing. We can no
longer claim that the United States' educational results are unparallel. Students around the world out perform Americans on assessments that measure 21st Century skills. Our teachers need better tools to address this growing problem.
The workplace, jobs and skills are changing. Today every student, whether he/she plans to go on to a four-year college, trade school or entry-level job, requires 21st Century skills to succeed in this new global economy.
To boost student achievement in Surry County Schools, I will work collaboratively with the superintendent and division staff to support the changes needed to reach higher levels of performance from students. To support the needed changes in Surry County Schools we have hired a new superintendent, an assistant superintendent of instruction, new administrators and highly qualified teachers at each grade level. High performance expectations and accountability from administrators, school board members and teachers remain elevated for the school year 2008 - 2009 to surpass the Standards of Learning results of previous years.
My plans are to continue to support the Surry Academy for Global Education (SAGE); safer schools; competitive salaries to attract and retain highly qualified staff; professional development for staff for 21st Century learning; the Surry County High School Renovation Project and to maintain a positive working relationship with the Surry County Board of Supervisors. I support parental involvement, engaging the educators and the community in decision making for Surry County Schools.
My plea to the school board members is to continue our steadfast advocacy for all students enrolled in our school division. I ask that the school board be committed to continuous education and training on issues related to achievement; use data on student achievement to set priorities for allocating resources and adjust the board's strategic plan on the basis of the data and community input.
As the school board embarks upon the Surry County High School Renovation Project, we ask for feedback from parents, administrators, teachers and citizens regarding this project to prepare our students for the new global economy.
The community is demanding higher levels of student achievement. Therefore, I know that our school board's success depends on student achievement. We shall make students and their learning our main priority.
