Dear Surry Students and Families,
We hope that all of our students enjoy their summer vacation through a variety of relaxing activities. We also want all of our students to enjoy new adventures, travel with family and explore the many opportunities available for continued learning. In this respect we want to start a summer reading program for all of our staff and students. Reading is a key skill for all students and adults.
The habit of reading a good book for pleasure is a habit of mind that reaps many benefits. Surry County Public Schools is committed to helping each student learn to read so that he or she will then read to learn. To help in this process we have created a Summer Reading Journal .
The Summer Reading Journal is full of ideas to make reading more exciting throughout the summer. Your teachers have provided your child with a booklist of suggested award-winning book titles for the summer. Please use this journal to record your thoughts and ideas and to complete activities about what you read this summer.
Return your Summer Reading Journal to your English/language arts teacher when you start the school year in September. Our school year will open with discussions and activities about the books we read this summer.
We understand that this is a new program that has great promise. Please support us by supporting your child in this activity. Please read to your small children every day and encourage older children to read each day. Discuss what your children are reading and help them complete their reading journal.
Thanks for your support and have a great summer!
Sincerely,
Lloyd Hamlin Superintendent
John Fahey Assistant Superintendent
