The Appomattox Regional Governor's School for the Performing Arts and Technology
Surry County Public Schools is a participating school division with the Appomattox Regional Governor's School for the Performing Arts and Technology (ARGS) in Petersburg, VA. Students who attend the school are transported to and from the school daily by the transportation department. Students who desire to attend the school must apply and complete an adjudication process during their 8th-grade year. Applications are normally available in the L.P. Jackson Middle School (LPJMS) Counseling Department on October 15th and are available to 8th-grade students who are legal residents of Surry County. Persons who are not currently enrolled in the school division should contact LPJMS for an application. The division currently sponsors a total of 6 students. The governor's school requires that all students who attend the school complete Algebra I for high school credit by the end of 8th grade. Click here for further details.
The Virginia Department of Education Summer Residential Gifted Programs
Surry County Public Schools participate in the Virginia Department of Education's Summer Residential Governor's Gifted Programs. Programs are normally offered in Agriculture, Engineering and Marine Science, Humanities, Life Sciences and Medicine, Mathematics, Science and Technology, and the Visual and Performing Arts. High school students can attend the program only once during their high school career and must apply through their high school. Home-schooled students must apply through the high school they would attend if they attended public school. Please contact the guidance department at Surry County High School for further information.
