The Surry County School Board approved the 2023-2024 school year calendar during its January 10th meeting. The school year will start on Monday, August 21, 2023, two weeks prior to Labor Day. The last day of school for the 2023-2024 school year will be Friday, May 31, 2024. The approved calendar maintains a two-week winter break and a weeklong spring break.

Also, the school board recently approved a policy requiring educators to notify parents of any instructional material that includes sexually explicit content. If necessary, notifications will be sent out at least 30 days prior to the use of any sexually explicit materials. Parents have the right to review the material and request alternative assignments.

  • This message will cover two announcements:  First, Surry County Public Schools would like to notify all parents and guardians that a required lockdown drill will be performed this week at all three schools. A letter with details about the lockdown drill can be found linked below. Second, the home football game against Greensville has been moved from Friday, September 30, 2022 to Thursday, September 29, 2022 at 7:00 p.m. due to the impending inclement weather.

  • P-EBT and SNAP EBT cardholders, please be aware that there is a phishing scam attempt circulating and P-EBT recipients are being asked to call or text a phony 1-866 number ending in 0486 from “VA EBT”. Please DO NOT RESPOND to or engage with any unsolicited phone number asking for your card number or PIN. The ONLY authorized P-EBT client customer service phone number is 1-866-281-2448. If you have engaged with an invalid phishing 866 number, please immediately contact the Virginia EBT Client Customer Service Helpdesk at 1-866-281-2448 to report your card stolen.  If you have questions or need more information, please email the DSS PEBT Inquiry team through the usual address or visit the VDSS webpage at

This is an update regarding questions we have received about summer P-EBT benefits.

The Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS) has recently made us aware that many households did not receive summer P-EBT benefits due to a card processing error. We have been informed that affected households will be issued a new P-EBT card and that all cards should be received no later than September 30.

If you recently received a P-EBT card that is not working, a replacement card is already on the way. You do not need to take any action to report your invalid card. VDSS has identified the households affected by this error.  Please do not contact the P-EBT call center to order another card, as this may further delay the processing of your benefits.

We understand this delay has been frustrating and want to assure you that we are in communication with VDSS to ensure the issue is fixed as quickly as possible. Schools are not able to provide answers to your P-EBT questions. Please visit for the latest information and guidance concerning P-EBT.

  • This is Dr. Serbrenia J. Sims, Superintendent. I hope that each of you had a wonderful summer and are looking forward to the opening of schools on Tuesday, September 6th.

Over the summer, Surry County Public Schools worked hand-in-hand with the Sheriff’s Office to identify ways to make our schools as safe as possible, by reducing risks. We are asking for your assistance by reviewing a brief (5 minutes) presentation.  At the end of the presentation, we will ask each student, parent, staff member, or community stakeholder to assist us, when necessary, by reporting any concerns that could jeopardize the safety of our schools.

We thank you in advance for partnering with our schools and the Sheriff’s Office to keep everyone safe.
