Mr. Giron Wooden
Dear Cougar Family:
It gives me great pleasure to greet you as the Principal of Surry County High School. I too am a fellow Cougar, member of the class of 1998; as well as an active citizen of the county. I received a strong educational foundation from Surry County Public Schools, which allowed me to obtain a B.A. in History/Political Science/Secondary Education from Virginia Union University and a M.Ed. in Educational Administration and Supervision from Virginia State University. I hold over fifteen years of experience as an educator; ten of them as an administrator. It is my goal as Principal to continue to facilitate the state of the art education that is being provided to the students of Surry County High School. It is very humbling to work with such an extraordinary faculty and staff and to be able to continue many of the traditions and values of my alma mater. I will always believe that Surry is truly something special.
Giron R. Wooden, Jr.
I am thrilled to be a part of the Cougar family at Surry County High School! This year marks my 14th year in public school education, with experiences as an Assistant Principal, teacher leader, and coach. After earning my BA in Sociology and Advocacy for Children from University of Maryland, College Park in 2004, I began my career as an educator with Teach for America in Charlotte, North Carolina. I went on to teach for 10 years in Charlotte and Chesterfield County, Virginia. I earned a M.Ed. in Educational Leadership from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2011. In 2015, I was awarded a Principal Fellowship in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where I served as Principal Fellow and Assistant Principal at the elementary and high school levels in the School District of Philadelphia. Last school year, I was an Assistant Principal in Petersburg, Virginia. As an educational leader, I seek to foster a learning environment that makes students feel safe enough to take risks and persevere through challenging, meaningful academic work. I believe education is the key to unlocking the freedom to choose how you want to live your life and my hope is for each student at Surry County High School to have the opportunity to gain that freedom.
Mrs. Mary D. Johnson
I received a B.A. In Sociology from Virginia Union University and M.Ed in School Counseling from Virginia Commonwealth University. I have over 17 years of school counseling and academic advising experience on the high school and college/university levels. I believe that all students deserve an encouraging support system in school to help them grow into happy, productive and socially conscious adults. I am looking forward to another awesome school year! Go Cougars!
