     C. Ward

It is with great honor and excitement that I serve as Principal of Surry County High School! After serving in the role of Assistant Principal at the high school for two years, I am excited to continue my leadership with the Mighty Cougars. I hold a M.Ed. in Administration and Supervision from Virginia Commonwealth University and a B.A. in Sociology from University of Maryland, College Park. I have 17 years' experience as an educator in the roles of teacher leader, coach, and administrator in the states of Virginia, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Georgia, and Illinois. It has truly been my pleasure to learn and grow in Surry County, and I believe it is true what everyone says - SURRY IS SOMETHING SPECIAL!

As principal, I seek to foster a positive learning environment that invests students in challenging, meaningful work and instills in students the grit and tenacity it takes to be successful in whatever life path they choose. I believe education is the key to unlocking the freedom to choose how you want to live your life. My hope is for each student at Surry County High School to have the opportunity to gain that freedom.

It is with great excitement and enthusiasm that I serve in my new capacity as your new Assistant Principal. I am honored to serve Surry County Public Schools in my new capacity. I am committed to working in partnership with Ms. Ward, the staff, students, and families to provide a safe, healthy learning environment that prepares all students to be competitive and productive citizens in a highly technical and global society.

I am currently in my 18th year in education; 13 years here in Surry County and 4 years in Norfolk Public Schools at Norview High School. I spent 10 years in the classroom as a Health and Physical Education teacher before moving into the role as Athletic Director. In addition to teaching, I really enjoyed coaching football and basketball. Of course, the pinnacle of my coaching career was in 2019 when our Cougars won the VHSL Class 1 Boys State Championship and being named Coach of the Year. As your new assistant principal, my vision is to establish and maintain a rapport with each family to continue to increase our parental involvement. Research has shown a connection between parental involvement and student achievement. Our children are the future and it takes all stakeholders to be actively involved in the educational process.
