Principal
James E. Pope Jr.It is with great excitement and enthusiasm that I serve in my new capacity as your new Principal. I am honored to serve as the proud Principal of Surry County High School. I am committed to working in partnership with the staff, students, and families to provide a safe, healthy learning environment that prepares all students to be competitive and productive citizens in a highly technical and global society.
I am currently entering my 20th year in education; 15 years here in Surry County and 4 years in Norfolk Public Schools at Norview High School. I spent 10 years in the classroom as a Health and Physical Education teacher before moving into the role as Athletic Director. In addition to teaching, I really enjoyed coaching football and basketball. Of course, the pinnacle of my coaching career was in 2019 when our Cougars won the VHSL Class 1 Boys State Championship and being named Coach of the Year.
As your new Principal, my vision is to establish and maintain a rapport with each family to continue to increase our parental involvement. Research has shown a connection between parental involvement and student achievement. Our children are the future and it takes all stakeholders to be actively involved in the educational process.
Assistant Principal
Preston L. McKellar Jr.
My passion is helping teachers and students maximize their potential. The joy of education comes from the educational journey, which includes many important components. I am deeply grateful for the first faces that students see on their journey and the early risers: bus drivers, cafeteria workers, security officers, the maintenance department, and custodians. Their support is invaluable in helping the front line of teachers, paraprofessionals, school counselors, and parents achieve the common goal of each student’s success. Our technology department equips our students with the best software and is constantly providing resources for our staff and students.
The school nurses, office staff, and central office are all integral parts of Surry County Public Schools.I am truly grateful for their contributions. Each of these components (and many more) has an important role in Building Excellence One Student at a Time. Looking forward to a great year!
