    School and Community Profile

    Surry County High School is located in Dendron, Virginia and serves grades 9-12. The high school opened its doors in 1975 and was dedicated in 1977. The county is composed of five electoral districts: Dendron, Surry, Claremont, Bacon’s Castle and Carsley. One of Virginia’s original counties, Surry County was formed in 1652, and is known for its vast farmland, pork products and lumber.

    Enrollment

    The total enrollment at Surry County High School for the 2022-2023 school year is 210 with a staff of approximately 40. Enrollment for the Senior Class of 2023 is 46 students.

    Curriculum

    Core courses are aligned to meet the requirements and standards of the Virginia Department of Education. Advanced Placement courses through Virtual Virginia, as well as Dual and Concurrent Enrollment courses through Brightpoint Community College are offered to grades 11-12 and are weighted. Electives are offered in Business, Music, Art, Engineering, Family and Consumer Science, Computer Science and Technology and JROTC.

    Graduation Requirements

    Students currently in grades 9-11 who are on a standard diploma path are required to earn a minimum of 24 course credits and 5 SOL verified credits. Current 12th graders must earn a minimum of 24 credits and 6 SOL verified credits.

    Students currently in grades 9-11 on an advanced diploma path are required to earn a minimum of 28 course credits and 5 SOL verified credits. Current 12th graders must earn a minimum of 28 course credits and 9 SOL verified credits.
