• Summer Reading Program

The English department at SCHS established a mandatory summer reading program to promote year-round reading and literacy. Rising freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors will be required to read a novel and complete an activity for assessment over the summer.

The novels by grade level are as follows:

    • 9th Grade
The Call of the Wild by Jack London

    • 10th Grade
Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck

    • 11th Grade
How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents by Julia Alvarez

    • 12th Grade
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

    • Dual Enrollment College Composition
Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger

All books are widely available at public libraries, bookstores, and on-line. Parents and students can talk with any English teacher for more details.
