Stef Soto Taco Queen Kick-Off

Luther Porter Jackson Middle School recently launched an exciting schoolwide reading initiative with a festive kickoff event centered around the book Stef Soto, Taco Queen by Jennifer Torres. The celebration on Monday, March 2, 2026 brought students and staff together to begin the shared reading experience with engaging activities, great food, and plenty of enthusiasm for reading.

To set the tone for the event, students participated in a variety of interactive activities designed to introduce them to the story and themes of the book. Adding to the excitement, students were treated to tacos during the kickoff celebration, tying perfectly into the theme of the book and creating a fun and memorable experience for everyone involved.

Each student also received a personal copy of Stef Soto, Taco Queen, made possible through the generous support of Primis Bank. The sponsorship ensured that every student has the opportunity to follow along with the story both at school and at home.

Many staff members are also participating in the initiative by recording themselves reading individual chapters. These recordings will be shared with students so they can listen along and enjoy the story in a new way, helping to make reading accessible, engaging, and community-centered.

The goal of the initiative is to build excitement around reading while bringing the entire school together through a shared story.

Dr. Monroe, Superintendent of Surry County Public Schools, commented, “This initiative brings to life our core values of connection, collaboration, communication, and care as every student felt a sense of belonging and joy when holding their personal copy of the novel in hand. It was great to see smiles and unity in our cougar community around reading!”

As students begin the journey with Stef Soto and her family’s taco truck, the school community looks forward to the conversations, lessons, and connections that will grow from this shared reading experience.
