Dear Parents and Guardians,
We want to share the following important upcoming events and reminders for September:
Interim Reports will be available in the Parent Portal app today, Thursday, September 17, 2026. These reports provide a mid-term update on your child's academic progress. Please review them carefully and feel free to contact your child’s teacher if you have any questions or concerns.
Parent-Teacher Conferences - Teachers will contact parents directly to set up virtual parent-teacher conferences during the week of September 21 - 25, 2026. This is a valuable opportunity to discuss your child's progress and address any questions or concerns you may have with your child’s teacher(s).
Attendance - Every day matters! Regular attendance helps students stay connected, engaged, and on track for success. We encourage families to continue making daily attendance a priority and to reach out if your child is experiencing challenges that may affect attendance. Together, through connection, collaboration, and communication, we can provide the CARE our Cougars need to succeed!
We appreciate your partnership and look forward to working together to support your child's education.
Cougars First, Always!
The RESET FOR SUCCESS: Wellness Explosion is a FREE community wellness event designed to bring youth, families, schools, faith-based organizations, and community leaders together for a day of connection, education, prevention, and empowerment. The event will be held on Saturday, September 12th in Surry, VA. (Please see the attached flyer for details.)

Cougar Nation-RED, WHITE & BLUE SPIRIT DAY!
Surry County Public Schools invites all Cougars to show their Cougar Pride in Every Stride on Friday, September 11th, as we honor the heroic and brave acts of those who made the ultimate sacrifice and those who courageously served others on 9/11.
❤️🤍💙 Wear your Red, White, and Blue! ❤️🤍💙
Let’s come together as a Small but Mighty Surry Nation to remember, honor, and celebrate the courage, unity, and resilience that define us.
Show your Cougar Pride.
Stand united.
Remember and honor.
Cougar Pride in Every Stride!
Cougars First…Always! 🐾

The safety and security of our students and staff are a top priority for Surry County Public Schools. We will be implementing a lockdown drill prior to September 22nd to ensure that our school remains a safe place for our students to learn. We are required to have our first lockdown drill within the first 20 days of school and two additional unannounced lockdown drills throughout the school year.
During a lockdown drill, students will remain in the classroom, regular activities will stop, and all doors will be secured. Students will remain inside the classroom until instructed by the safety authority figure to resume activities. Also, all doors will be locked and no one is permitted to enter or leave the classroom and/or the school building for the duration of the drill.
Pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students are exempt from mandatory participation in lockdown drills during the first 60 days of the school session. Each pre-kindergarten and kindergarten student will participate in the lockdown drills after the first 60 days of school.
We kindly ask that you take the time to speak with your child about the lockdown drill and reinforce its importance. Please contact the school if you have any questions.
With Great Appreciation,
Dr. Herbert Monroe
Superintendent
We are excited to welcome our students and families to the 2026–2027 school year! As we prepare for the first day of school on Monday, August 24, 2026, we would like to share a few important reminders to help ensure a smooth start to the year.
Please join us for Open House on Thursday, August 20, 2026, from 12:00–4:00 p.m. and 5:00–7:00 p.m. Open House is a great opportunity to:
Meet your child’s teachers and school staff.
Tour the school and visit your child’s classroom.
Learn about curriculum and classroom expectations.
Ask questions and receive important information for the upcoming school year.
Annual Registration Reminder
All parents and guardians are required to complete online annual registration for each student every school year. Keeping this information current helps ensure that we have accurate student records, emergency contacts, and contact information for timely communication throughout the year.
Annual registration can be completed through the PowerSchool Parent Portal app. If you have questions or need assistance completing the registration process, please contact the main office of your child’s school. Our staff will be happy to assist you.
We look forward to seeing you at Open House and partnering with you for a successful 2026–2027 school year!

As we prepare for the upcoming school year, please ensure your child is ready for the first day of school on August 24, 2026.
Required Immunizations
Before the first day of school, all required immunizations must be up to date for certain grade levels. Rising 7th and 12th graders, as well as children entering preschool or kindergarten, will need vaccines to begin school. Please contact your healthcare provider or local health department if your child needs updated immunizations.
Complete Annual Online Registration
Returning Student Annual Registration is now open through the PowerSchool Parent Portal. Annual online registration is required every school year for all students and helps ensure we have accurate contact, medical, and emergency information on file before school begins.
To complete registration:
Log in to your PowerSchool Parent Portal.
Select Forms.
Complete all forms under Student Annual Registration.
Click Submit when finished.
If you need assistance with online registration, please visit https://www.surryschools.net/page/current-parents for instructions or contact your child's school office.
Thank you for helping us ensure all students are healthy, safe, and ready for a successful school year. We look forward to welcoming everyone back on August 24th!

To our teachers:
Your passion, dedication, and unwavering commitment to excellence do not go unnoticed. You are mentors, motivators, and champions for every student who walks through your classroom doors. Your impact reaches far beyond teaching and learning. You are shaping futures.
On behalf of the entire SCPS family, thank you for all that you do. We celebrate you this week and always.

Dear Parents and Staff,
We are excited to share that YMCA will soon be partnering with our school division to provide before and after-school childcare services, with the potential to expand into summer programming for our students. The YMCA is widely recognized for its commitment to youth development, healthy living, and strengthening communities, and we are eager to explore how this partnership can best serve the needs of our families.
To ensure these services are designed with our community in mind, we are asking for your input. Your feedback will help us better understand scheduling needs, areas of interest, affordability considerations, and the level of demand for both school-year and summer childcare options. Whether you anticipate using these services or simply want to share your perspective, your voice is important in helping us build a program that supports our students and families.
Please take a few moments to complete our brief survey https://engagement.ymca.org/jfe/form/SV_9BLDVoiQI5CmNrU.
Thank you for your continued partnership and support as we work together to provide safe, engaging, and accessible opportunities for all children in our community.
