Surry Elementary School students, staff, and special guests gathered on November 3, 2026, for a heartfelt Yellow Ribbon Ceremony in recognition of Veterans Day. The special event provided an opportunity for students to honor the brave men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces while learning about the importance of service, sacrifice, and gratitude.

A highlight of the ceremony was the symbolic tying of a yellow ribbon around the tree in front of Surry Elementary School by first-grade students. The yellow ribbon serves as a visible reminder of the school's appreciation for veterans and their dedication to protecting our nation's freedoms.

The program also featured participation from the Surry County High School Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (JROTC), bringing together students from across the school division in a shared tribute to our nation's heroes.

First-grade students performed a special musical selection in honor of veterans, adding a meaningful touch to the ceremony. The program also included the reading of the names of veterans being recognized, providing an opportunity to acknowledge individuals whose service and sacrifices have made a lasting impact on our country and community.

Through this special ceremony, Surry Elementary School reinforced the importance of patriotism, respect, and appreciation for those who have served. The event also provided students with a meaningful opportunity to participate in a tradition of honoring veterans.

“Surry County Public Schools extends its sincere gratitude to all veterans for their courage, dedication, and service to our nation. We are proud of our students and staff for coming together to recognize these extraordinary individuals," said Dr. Herbert Monroe, Superintendent of Surry County Public Schools.
