Principal

Mrs. Brittney Custalow

Dear Surry Elementary School Community,

I am excited to welcome you to a brand-new school year as the proud Principal of Surry Elementary School, Home of the Cougar Cubs! With 16 years of experience in education—13 of them right here in Surry County—I am deeply honored to serve the community that I also call home.

I am a proud graduate of Surry County Public Schools (Class of 2005). I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from Chowan University and a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership and Supervision (PK–12) from Old Dominion University. I am also entering my second year in the SURN Principal’s Academy at the College of William and Mary, where I continue to strengthen my leadership skills to better serve our students and families.

Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of serving in many roles—classroom teacher, 21st Century Community Learning Center and Title IV Part B grant manager, Assistant Principal, and now Principal. These experiences have shaped my mission: to provide students with meaningful learning opportunities that inspire creativity, curiosity, and confidence.

This year, our theme is “Under Construction: Cougar Cubs Paving the Way!” At Surry Elementary, we believe every child is building a strong foundation for success. Just like a construction site, there will be planning, teamwork, and hard work—but also plenty of excitement as we watch growth take shape day by day. With the support of our dedicated staff, families, and community, our Cougar Cubs will continue paving the way toward a future filled with achievement and endless possibilities.

I believe all students deserve a safe, engaging, and nurturing learning environment. Together, we will continue the proud tradition of excellence at SES while also building new pathways for our students to shine.

I am truly looking forward to a year filled with growth, progress, and new opportunities—and I cannot wait to strengthen our partnerships with all of our Cougar Cub families.

With Cougar Cub Pride,

Brittney J. Custalow
