Each year, students from Surry County High School step into the world of personal finance through JA Finance Park, an interactive field trip that prepares students to make informed financial decisions. Inside this simulated town, students take on adult roles, managing budgets, paying bills, and discovering what it truly takes to balance the responsibilities of everyday life.
Last school year, one student’s experience went far beyond the classroom. Elizabeth Schmoll, a Surry County High School student, found her future during her visit to JA Finance Park. While exploring the program, Elizabeth met a professional who introduced her to new career possibilities, an encounter that would eventually lead to a paid apprenticeship and a clear career pathway she is now pursuing with confidence.
Elizabeth recently shared her inspiring story at the ribbon-cutting and relaunch of the JA Career Center. Addressing more than 100 community members, she reflected on the life-changing impact of the program:
“This has honestly been a dream come true for me: I’m continuing in a paid apprenticeship program while finishing high school, and I can earn a degree and grow with Anton Paar. The confidence I gained at JA Finance Park showed me that there are opportunities if I just go for them.”

Career and Technical Education Teacher Jasmine Highsmith Ruffin expressed her pride in Elizabeth’s success and the program’s lasting impact on students.
“Stories like Elizabeth’s remind us why experiences like JA Finance Park are so valuable. They open doors, build confidence, and help our students envision the futures they deserve,” Ruffin said.
Elizabeth’s story is a powerful reminder of how experiential learning opportunities like JA Finance Park can open doors for students. They spark curiosity, build confidence, and help young people envision and achieve the futures they deserve.
“We are deeply grateful for our CTE programs and experiences like JA Finance Park that empower our students to explore their futures,” said Dr. Airon Grim, Chief Academic Officer, who oversees Career and Technical Education programs. We couldn’t be prouder of Elizabeth and all she has achieved. Her success is a shining example of what’s possible when students are given opportunities to learn, lead, and envision their future with confidence.”
