Surry, VA – Dr. Herbert Monroe was appointed as the next superintendent of Surry County Public Schools at today’s school board meeting. His new position will be effective October 7, 2024. Monroe has more than 18 years of administrative experience in public education in Virginia, including 6 years at the assistant superintendent level. Since 2020, he has served as the assistant superintendent with Caroline County Public Schools prior to that, served as the Director of School Leadership and Improvement in Caroline. Monroe has served as a high school and elementary Principal in Henrico County Public Schools and an Assistant Principal in Chesterfield County Public Schools. Monroe also worked for 6 years for the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities.

Laura Ruffin, chair of the Surry County School Board, believes Dr. Monroe will be a great fit for the division. She stated, “We welcome Dr. Monroe to Surry County Public Schools. His enthusiasm, knowledge, and experience will be a tremendous asset to the division and community.”
Monroe earned a Doctor of Education in educational leadership and policy studies from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, a master of administration and supervision from Virginia Commonwealth University, and a bachelor of science in education psychology from Lock Haven University.
The Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) assisted the school board with the superintendent search process.
